Laurel Lyckholm, MD

Interim Chief, WVU Section of Hematology/Oncology

Laurel Lyckholm, MD, joins WVU from University of Iowa Health Care (UIHC) Carver College of Medicine, where she served as medical director of the inpatient hematology/oncology service.

Prior to her time at Iowa, Dr. Lyckholm spent 19 years at Virginia Commonwealth University as the Sidney G. Page Jr., MD Professor of Bioethics and Humanities, as well as professor of hematology/oncology and palliative care.

She earned her medical degree from Creighton University, where she also completed her residency and chief residency. She completed hematology/oncology fellowship training at UIHC before joining the faculty. She also completed a fellowship at the University of Chicago MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics.

Her research and clinical interests have been directed toward improving cancer and palliative care for the most vulnerable of our citizens, including indigent patients and inmates of correctional facilities.

Dr. Lyckholm is active in the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She is also a member of the American Society of Hematology. She has studied and written about a variety of topics, including cancer care of the underserved, existential issues in dying patients, and symptom management in patients receiving chemotherapy.
