A. Courtney DeVries, PhD

Deputy Director, WVU Cancer Institute

Deputy Director A. Courtney DeVries, PhD, leads the research initiatives at the WVU Cancer Institute. She plays an instrumental role in developing and advancing the Institute’s mission to become a leading cancer research facility.

Dr. DeVries also serves as the WVU School of Medicine’s John T. and June R. Chambers Chair of Oncology Research. She holds a dual appointment at the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute.

She has served as a leader in the WVU School of Medicine since joining the faculty in 2018. In addition to her chair role, she serves as the assistant vice president for faculty mentoring, director of the professional development core for the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and principal investigator and director of the Stroke Center of Biomedical Research Excellence.

Dr. DeVries’ research has been at the forefront of characterizing the effects of social isolation on health outcomes, ranging from stroke to cancer. She is also directing multiple National Institutes of Health projects; much of her recent work focuses on “chemo-brain,” the role of chemotherapy drugs on post-treatment memory, mood, and sleep.

Prior to joining WVU, she served as professor of neuroscience at Ohio State University. She held joint appointments in the Department of Psychology and College of Nursing.
